and more complicated structures. A printed structure could contain embedded
circuitry, wiring and plumbing. It could be formed with intelligent air spaces,
or voids, so additional housing infrastructure can be easily added later.
The robotic designer
In their classic topic on computer graphics Evolutionary Art and Computers ,
authors Stephen Todd and William Latham explained, “The computer does
not blindly follow the rules, but uses them to give suggestions, and leaves the
artist to make inal aesthetic selections.” 2 Next generation intelligent design
software tools will have the same effect on design.
Someday the creative process will be aided by intelligent and responsive
software, or a “Robotic Designer,” that will speed up the discovery of design
solutions. Today, computer algorithms already provide design solutions that
are more complex than anything a human designer could have come up with.
In the future, a Robotic Designer—attached to a 3D printer and a data source—
will change the role of the human designer, artist or architect.
Future humans will no longer spend time drafting and testing out possible
design solutions. Instead, we will provide a Robotic Designer with a high-level
concept of the design problem—its goals, it constraints, and its context. The
human designer will deine the parameters of the desired solution. Rather than
being rendered obsolete by the new tools, future human designers, artists and
architects will scale new creative heights.
