A 3D printed modular shoe designed by Hoon Chung
Hoon, like many designers, liked the fact that 3D printing his design con-
cepts gave him more control over the manufacturing process. Earlier in the
semester, Hoon had irst considered injection molding the shoes. He visited
a shoe factory in Spain and witnessed the environmental damage inlicted by
glues and other chemical processes the factory used.
Hoon turned to 3D printing and found that the additive manufacturing
process enabled him to create a shoe out of modular components. The shoes'
parts are interchangeable. So their wearer could snap apart her current pair
and swap out the heels for some of a different color to create an entirely new
look. Modular, snap-apart parts also don't need to be glued together, a plus
for environmental reasons.
