Visually impaired students may beneit from being able to hold physical
models of abstract concepts in their hands. In addition, for all students, regard-
less of how they absorb new knowledge, re-creating lessons in a physical
medium adds another layer of reinforcement to what they're learning. Maybe
most importantly, many students enjoy hands-on learning.
Many people underestimate the fact that for too many students, the school
day is a long and dreaded exercise. In the words of Glen Bull, “learning should
be enjoyable.” Shallow as it may sound, if you were a 7
th
grader, what sort of
lesson plans would make you look forward to coming to class every day?
Let's take a look at 3D printing in a purely pedagogical context. Could it be
possible that giving students access to tools of design and production could
simply improve how they learn? Perhaps (as teachers have noticed) students
who don't excel in traditional methods of teaching may lourish when given
access to their own tools of design and production.
