No wonder people frequently shudder or laugh when they learn about 3D
printed food. An article in the Reader's Digest , a widely read popular magazine
in the United States, eloquently expressed the downside of processed food:
Unfortunately, most processed foods are laden with sweeteners, salts,
artificial flavors, factory-created fats, colorings, chemicals that
alter texture, and preservatives. But the trouble is not just what's
been added, but what's been taken away. Processed foods are often
stripped of nutrients designed by nature to protect your heart, such
as soluble fiber, antioxidants, and “good” fats. Combine that with
additives, and you have a recipe for disaster. 4
The perceived evils of processed food are nothing new. In Battle Creek,
Michigan, in the early 20th century, people journeyed to the Battle Creek
Sanitarium to solve their health problems. The Sanitarium was founded by the
Kellogg brothers who would ironically, would later go on to become wealthy
by selling Kellogg's breakfast cereal, one of the most processed foods there is.
The Battle Creek Sanitarium offered what at that time was a radical new
approach to health. Patients ate low-fat, low-protein diets and took part in
vigorous exercise. The Kellogg brothers advised their wards “if you want to
cure what ails you, eat like a chimp.”
