Cookies with text inside
One of the wonderful things about eating a piece of lasagna is its internal
composition, the rich variety of different types of cheeses, mushrooms, and
pasta in the gooey inside and the rough texture of the hardened baked pasta
on top. However, multi-material printing is still in its infancy.
A few years ago Franz Nigl, then at Cornell, printed multi-material cookies
of two different colors of cookie dough. Franz was already a skilled baker. He
was from Austria, a country with a proud tradition of precision baking. In
fact, his grandmother was known for her ine desserts, a standout baker even
in Austria's crowded ield of gourmet pastry chefs.
Franz's goal was to prove that multi-material 3D printing could be applied
to fabricate objects with a complex internal geometry. Franz's design project
was to print cookies whose insides would contain a special surprise for their
“user.” Eventually, like Brandon, he found that cookie dough was ideal raw
material.
