In-Depth Information
The intent of the Cornucopia design concept is to transform cooking. The
project's website explains, “While digital media has transformed every facet
of society, the fundamental technologies we encounter in the kitchen today
provide only incremental improvements to the tools we have been using for
hundreds of years.” Each Cornucopia prototype addresses a fundamental cook-
ing process. What makes them disruptive is the application of computing to
foodstuffs. On their website Coelho and Zigelbaum explain that their design
prototypes could offer a new way to cook by physically and chemically trans-
forming “ingredients into new compounds; and inally their modeling into
aesthetically pleasing and delectable textures and shapes.
The Digital Chocolatier is a design concept for a food printer that can create
custom chocolates.
The strong emotional and aesthetic appeal of the Cornucopia food printer
prototypes demonstrates the potential for technological innovation in cook-
ing and eating. Food printers would offer new creative opportunities. Cookie
