COMMUNICATION TIPS
1. PUBLIC PHONES
There are public phones ( cabines ) throughout the city. Use coins, a credit card or a
phonecard.
2. PHONECARDS
Purchaseaphonecardfromanewsstand,phonecentreortobaccoshop( estanc ).The
Telefónicaphonecardcomesindenominationsof€5and€10.Phonecentres( locutor-
is ) usually sell phone cards with a scratch-off pin number for cheap calls.
3. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS
To make an international call, dial 00 followed by the country code (UK: 44; US/
Canada: 1; Australia: 61; New Zealand: 64), thearea code and thephone number. To
call Spain from abroad, dial the international access code then 34 for Spain plus the
fullphonenumber.ForoperatorassistanceinmakinginternationalcallsfromSpain,
dial 11825 .Thisisalsothenumbertocallifyouwanttomakeaninternationalcollect
call as well as for international information and directory enquiries.
4. LOCAL & REGIONAL CALLS
The cost of a local call from a phone booth to a land line is generally about 20 cents.
Barcelona phone numbers all begin with the code 93; the rest of Catalonia is divided
upintotheprovincesofLleida(973),Girona(972)andTarragona(977).Foroperator
assistance, dial 11822 .
5. PHONE CENTRES
Phonecentres( locutoris )provideamorecomfortable-andusuallycheaper-altern-
ativetopublicpayphones.Phonesarehookeduptoadigitaldisplayshowingthecost,
whichispaidattheend.YouwillfindseveralinElRavalaswellasaroundSantssta-
tion and in the Poble Sec neighbourhood.
6. MOBILE PHONES
Spain has several mobile phone operators, including Vodaphone and Orange. Roam-
ing rates vary widely, so check with your service provider before leaving.
