3. MANSANA DE LA DISCÒRDIA
At the heart of the city's Quadrat d'Or (Golden Square) lies this stunning block of
houses.Literally“theblockofdiscord”,theMansanadelaDiscòrdiaisso-calledbe-
causeofthedramaticcontrastofitsthreeflagshipbuildings.Builtbetween1900and
1907 by the three Modernista greats, rival architects Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner
andPuigiCadafalch,thebuildingswerecommissionedbycompetingbourgeoisfam-
ilies.Domènechisrepresentedbytheornate CasaLleóMorera ; Puigmakeshismark
withtheGothic-inspired CasaAmatller ;andGaudíflauntshisarchitecturalprowess
with Casa Batlló . All boast superb interiors, but Casa Lleó Morera is closed to the
public. Casa Amatller runs tours of the top floor studio and the exhibition area. The

4. HOSPITAL DE LA SANTA CREU I DE SANT PAU
A fully functioning hospital until 2010, it was built in two stages from 1905 by
DomènechiMontanerandhisson.Atributeto Modernisme -andDomènech'san-
swer to Gaudí's Sagrada Família - the design includes eight pavilions and various
other buildings linked by underground tunnels. The pavilions recall the history of
Cataloniawithmurals,mosaicsandsculptures.Interlacingthebuildingsarebeauti-
fulgardens,whichareopentovisitors,alongwiththecourtyards.PartoftheRutadel
