In-Depth Information
When completed, the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman resort (see above
and page 158) will include a nine-hole Greg Norman-designed private golf
course.
WATERSPORTS: For all its land-based venues, Grand Cayman is espe-
cially well-known for its water-based group activities. One of the island's
largest watersports operators is Red Sail Sports (
877-RED-SAIL,
www.redsail.com). Along with scuba diving, excursions to Stingray City,
and watersports, the operator offers catamaran trips aboard its luxury
catamarans, the 65-foot Spirit of Ppalu and the 62-foot Spirit of Cayman.
Both are available for private charters, including four-hour day sails for 50
to 70 participants; three-hour dinner sails for 35 to 40 attendees; and two-
hour sunset sails for groups of 50 to 70 people. The charter price for the
Spirit of Ppalu is $550 per hour; the rate is $650 per hour for the Spirit of
Cayman . There is a minimum rental of two hours. Red Sail Sports also of-
fers dive boat charters for 20 to 24 divers (or 30 snorkelers) at $330 per
hour. Sportfishing is another popular option for small groups or incen-
tives; deep-sea charters for four persons are $650 for a full day or $450 for a
half-day. Other watersports options include sailing for $25 per hour, wa-
ter-skiing for $75 per half-hour, and personal watercraft rentals for $50
per half-hour for single riders.
TEAMBUILDING: Teambuilding exercises are another corporate group
option, and Red Sail Sports offers several, including beach games such
as coconut bowling and kayak races. The Jeep Rally Treasure Hunt
makes a good option for groups who want to see more of the island. For $22
per person, groups spend a day searching for clues around the island, end-
ing the day at Rum Point for beach relaxation. Cost of Jeep rental is $125
and includes insurance, Cayman Islands temporary driver's license, a full
tank of gas, and transportation to and from your hotel. Other options in-
clude a raft building competition and Pirates' Capture, with a beach din-
ner invaded by “pirates.”
On Grand Cayman, group functions don't just take place on water, they
continue underwater as well, thanks to Atlantis Submarines (
800-
253-0493, fax 345-949-8574, www.goatlantis.com). Up to 46 attendees can
take part in a charter submarine dive. Rides can be modified to feature a
corporate theme. In the past, meeting planners have arranged to highlight
companies by putting a CEO in scuba gear outside the submarine and sub-
merging logos and corporate symbols so the vessel “discovers” the items on
the dive. See page 110 for information about trips with Atlantis Submarines.
The Sister Islands
Opportunities can also be found for smaller conferences and group activi-
ties on the sister islands. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are good choic-
es for quiet incentives, pre- or post-trips, or intense strategy meetings.
