Living in the
Cayman Islands
With its beautiful setting, low crime rate, and high standard of living,
it's no surprise that many visitors to the Cayman Islands wonder
what it would be like to live on one of these sunny isles. Although it's a
pricey proposition, visitors can relocate to the Cayman Islands.
When moving to the Caymans, you'll basically fall into one of two catego-
ries: a worker, with or without dependents, or a person coming to reside
and not work, either permanently or temporarily, on the islands.
Work Permits
To work in the Cayman Islands, you must obtain a work permit from the
Department of Immigration (see below). This permit allows you and a lim-
ited number of dependents to live on the island during the term of your em-
ployment (any dependents will need to obtain their own work permits,
though). If you are self-employed, you'll need to obtain the work permit;
otherwise it is obtained by your employer.
Initial Residency Permits
If you are considering a move, you'll need to apply for residency before
moving. Make your application to the Chief Immigration Officer, Depart-
ment of Immigration, PO Box 1098, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands,
British West Indies,
345-949-8344, fax 345-949-8486; www.gov.ky/im-
migration. The initial residence permit is granted for a six-month period.
When you apply to live in the Cayman Islands, you'll need to write a letter
requesting short-term residence. With that letter, you'll need to supply a
police clearance certificate covering the past 10 years. You will obtain this
from your last place of residence (every member of the family age 16 or
over will need this). If you are from the UK, you can provide an affidavit
that you do not have criminal convictions. You'll also need to supply a med-
ical report of health for each family member, with results of an HIV test
and VDRL test. Three references from persons not related to you are re-
quired as well as evidence of your financial status, such as a letter from
your banker. You'll also need photographs.
