In-Depth Information
Beach Walk to First Cay , southeast shore at southeast end of South Side
Road. This hike takes about two hours and follows the shoreline below the
bluff. Watch for brown boobies, magnificent frigate birds, and tropicbirds
along this stretch. The hike goes to the large rock known as the First Cay;
beyond that point the sea can get hazardous.
Long Beach , far east end of Spot Bay Road. Travel as far as you can on
Spot Bay Road then park and walk through the sea grape-lined path. The
trail widens into a rock- and coral-filled area with ironshore to the water;
you're rewarded for the somewhat difficult walk with a beautiful view of
the bluff. Hiking too far east can be dangerous because of hazardous seas.
Tennis
If tennis is your game, you'll find courts at Brac Reef Beach Resort on
the South Side (see page 211).
Caving
The bluff is pocked with caves, which frame beautiful seaside views. No
one really knows the history of these caves. Some guess that pre-Colum-
bian Indian settlements used them; others say they were the lair of plun-
dering pirates who used their dark recesses to hide their loot. None of
these legends has been proven, but one use of the caverns is known for cer-
tain. During the Great Hurricane of 1932, the caves offered shelter for
many Brackers. During Hurricane Gilbert, some longtime residents also
turned to the caves for safety.
Several of the 18 caves on Cayman Brac have been explored. Five are fre-
quently visited by vacationers.
Rebecca ' s Cave , east of Divi Tiara Hotel (see page 211), this
cave is marked with signs. The best known of the island's caves,
it is named for a young child who died here of exposure during
the Great Hurricane of 1932. The child's grave is seen in the
center of the largest cave room. Rebecca's Cave is located at
ground level and is the easiest to reach.
Skull Cave . This interesting cavern is on the north coast near
the high school and east of Faith Hospital.
Peter ' s Cave. This cave requires either a climb down a steep
path or a hike downhill, so bring along good shoes for this task.
From the cave, you can view the community of Spot Bay below.
