Rum Point : The northern tip of the east end is Rum Point, a peninsula
that's home to willowy casuarina trees, chalky sand, aquamarine waters,
and a club with just about every imaginable watersport. This point is home
to the prettiest waters in the Cayman Islands - don't forget your camera!
No one's quite sure how Rum Point got its name,
but many believe a ship filled with rum wrecked
here.
Over $5 million was spent to improve this getaway spot. It offers a full-
service dinner restaurant, casual lunch eatery and bar, decks and walk-
ways, plenty of comfy hammocks and picnic tables, a gift shop, and more.
You can arrive at Rum Point by car (about an hour's drive from George
Town). To reach Rum Point, travel east from George Town on A2 (Crewe
Road, which becomes Red Bay Road). Continue east on Red Bay Road
through the communities of Savannah and Bodden Town, where the road
becomes A3. Go east past the town of Breakers for about a mile. Turn left
(north) on Frank Sound Road or A4. Continue north to a Y intersection at
Ironshore Flat. Bear left on A4 along the north coast for about seven miles.
A4 will become Rum Point Drive; follow the signs to Rum Point.
You can also reach Rum Point on the Rum Pointer ferry, which departs
from the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman. This 120-passenger ferry travels
to Rum Point in about 40 minutes. For ferry reservations,
345-949-9098.
Ferry tickets are about US $15 round-trip. If you're at Rum Point at dusk,
don't miss the tarpon feeding off the docks.
