In-Depth Information
Grand Canyon: Situated near the Sandbar west of Rum Point, this 80- to
110-foot wall dive is for intermediate and advanced divers.
Snorkeling
The east end is home to several good snorkel sites other than Stingray
City's the Sandbar and the Coral Gardens.
Wreck of Geneva Kathleen : This wooden hulled schooner was wrecked
in a 1929 hurricane. Today the wreck is a favorite with snorkelers because
of its depth (just seven feet) and the artifacts that are scattered around the
site. “Look, don't touch” when it comes to the artifacts, however; these are
protected and cannot be taken from the site. Be careful of strong currents
in this area.
Morritt's Tortuga Club: Morritt's is a favorite with windsurfers but just
off the dock, snorkelers find an excellent site inside the reef. Look for good
coral growth as well as plentiful marine life.
Rum Point: The calm, clear waters right off Rum Point are a favorite with
many family snorkelers. You'll find some coral formations here.
Sunset Reef East: The site features large coral heads.
Half Moon Bay: On the south side of the island, this shallow site is often
home to eels and crabs.
Turtle Inn, Bodden Town: This inn is home to good snorkeling just off-
shore. Check the accommodations section below for contact information.
You'll find a large number of snorkel operators (see page 139); a unique
tripis the Eco-Adventure offered by Ocean Frontiers (
800-544-6576 or
345-947-7500, www.oceanfrontiers.com). The two-hour trip starts at Kai-
bo Yacht Club near Rum Point and travels to tour the mangrove forest;
both snorkeling and birdwatching are combined for a look at what lies
above and below the water on this excursion. The rate is US $39.
If wrecks are your thing, Ocean Frontiers also offers a special wreck snor-
kel tour exploring up to five wreck sites (weather permitting). Snorkelers
visit the Wreck of the Ten Sails, including the HMS Convert , the Ridge-
field , the Marybelle , the Methuselam , the Geneva Kathleen , the Romundi
and more. The tour lasts two hours and costs US $29.
ADVENTURE TALKS: OCEAN FRONTIERS
We talked with Steve Broadbelt about the snorkel adventures
available through Ocean Frontiers.
How does the east end of Grand Cayman rate as a snorkel site?
The sites are the most remote and least visted on the island: they
are healthy and vibrant reefs full of tropical fish and lush corals.
How does your Eco-Adventure introduce travelers to Cayman's
wildlife both above and below the water?
