Day-Trips
If you are making a repeat visit to Grand Cayman or you're booking a week
on the island, you may want to consider a day-trip to Cayman Brac or Lit-
tle Cayman. Less than an hour's flight northeast of Grand Cayman but
worlds apart in terms of atmosphere, these small islands are tailor-made
for travelers in search of bonefishing, secluded beaches, and nature
appreciation.
Day-trips are easy thanks to frequent flights from Island Air (
345-949-
5252, fax 345-949-7044). Special day-trip rates from Grand Cayman to ei-
ther Cayman Brac or Little Cayman are available for US $110. Several
daily flights connect the islands. Return flights allow travelers to stay on
the island until late afternoon, arriving back on Grand Cayman a little af-
ter 6 pm.
CAYMAN BRAC : Like its smaller sibling, Cayman Brac has its own spe-
cial qualities, assets that include undersea walls, the most rugged terrain
found in the Cayman Islands, caves that tempt exploration, birding, and
much more.
The island is named for the “brac,” Gaelic for
bluff, which soars 140 feet from the sea on the is-
land's east end.
The bluff is the most distinctive feature of this 12-mile-long, one-mile-
wide island located 89 miles east-northeast of Grand Cayman and just
seven miles from Little Cayman.
The sheer bluff is visited by hikers and non-hikers alike, and is a favorite
for birdwatching, one of the most popular activities. Here, the 180-acre
Parrot Reserve is home to endangered Cayman Brac parrot. Only 400 of
the birds remain in the wild on this island.
With a population of fewer than 1,300 residents, Cayman Brac is closer in
pace to Little Cayman than its big brother, Grand Cayman. Residents, or
Brackers, are known for their personable nature, and welcome vacation-
ers to their sunny isle.
Among Cayman Brac's unique features are its many caves . The bluff is
pocked with caves that frame beautiful seaside views. Several of the 18
caves on Cayman Brac have been explored and five are frequently visited
