4. Newton actually coinvented the calculus with Gottfried Willhelm Leibniz
in the seventeenth century. Both are credited with devising the symbolism
and the system of rules for computing derivatives and integrals, but their
notation and emphases differed. A debate rages as to who did what first, but
both of these giants had good reason to revise the language of science (i.e.,
mathematics) to explain motion.
