Structure influences forces. As mentioned in Chapter 1, buildings can be
viewed much like an organism. The building grows from a small idea. Its
shape and size must meet certain functional expectations and all the organs,
bones, skins, and so on, must be integrated and grow mutually.
The Beijing Olympic Stadium designed for the 2008 games seeks to inte-
grate multiple complex systems—structure, walls, roof, and ventilation—into a
cohesive whole that merges function with form (see Figs. S2.5 and S2.6). The
