▲▲ St. Isaac's Cathedral (Исаакиевский Собор) —The gold dome of St. Isaac's glit-
ters at the end of Malaya Morskaya Ulitsa, not far from the Admiralty. St. Isaac's was built
between 1818 and 1858, and its Neoclassical exterior reminds Americans of the US Cap-
itol building. While the lavish interior is very impressive, if you're short on time I'd skip
this in favor of the more typical (and arguably more opulent) Church on Spilled Blood.
The interior has a few exhibits, but ultimately it's all about the grand space. It feels like
a big European Catholic church. To many, it's reminiscent of St. Peter's in Rome, but with
a few typically Orthodox elements (iconostasis, no pews). Aside from a small side chapel
(at the left end of the iconostasis), this is not a functioning house of worship—it's technic-
ally a museum.
