Visiting the Church: Begun just after Alexander's assassination but not finished until
1907, the church is built in a neo-Russian, Historicist style. That means that its designers
created a building that was a romantic, self-conscious, fairy-tale image of their own na-
tional history and traditions—similar to Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria or the Matthias
Church in Budapest. Looted during the 1917 Russian Revolution, the church was used for
storage during the communist era, then restored in the 1990s. It is still not used for services,
though.
