Leonardo is clear: in the tilt of Mary's head and position of Jesus' pudgy legs (similar
to the Litta Madonna ) and in the child's beyond-his-years focus on an object (from the
Benois Madonna ). The picture is remarkable for its color harmonies and its perfected
forms—characteristics that Raphael would beautifully develop in his later works. While
you're in this room, look also for Raphael's somber Holy Family (c. 1507), another rare
early work. It's also known as Madonna with Beardless Joseph, for obvious reasons.
