Stockmann Department Store:
Finally, you'll come to the prestigious Stockmann
department store—Finland's answer to Harrods or Macy's. Stockmann is the biggest, best,
and oldest department store in town, with a great gourmet supermarket in the basement (see
listing in “Shopping in Helsinki”). Just beyond is Helsinki's main intersection, where Es-
planade and Mannerheimintie meet. (Mannerheimintie is named for Carl Gustaf Manner-
heim, the Finnish war hero who frustrated the Soviets in World War II.)
