In-Depth Information
The Länsi terminal, in Helsinki's West Harbor (Länsistama), is for large car ferries to/
from Tallinn and St. Peter Line boats to St. Petersburg. You can get to downtown Helsinki
on tram #9 (leaves from right outside the door, zips you to the train station downtown) or
by taxi (about €15).
ByCruiseShip: Cruises arrive at any of four different terminals in Helsinki; for all the
details, see the end of this chapter.
By Train and Bus: The train station, an architectural landmark, is near the top of the
Esplanade, a 15-minute walk from Market Square. Local buses leave from both sides of the
building, trams stop out front, and the Metro runs underneath. The long-distance bus sta-
tion is two blocks (or one tram stop) away, on the other side of Mannerheimintie; the ticket
office and machines are on the ground floor, with bus platforms below.
By Plane: Helsinki Airport is about 10 miles north of the city (airport code: HEL,
www.helsinki-vantaa.fi ) . To get between the airport and downtown Helsinki, take the Fin-
nair bus (€6.20, leaves for airport from platform 30 at Elielinaukio on west side of train sta-
tion, 3/hour, 35-minute trip, www.finnair.com ; stops at some downtown hotels on request)
or public bus #615 (€4.50, pay driver, not covered by transit tickets or Helsinki Card, leaves
for airport from platform 3 at Rautatientori on east side of train station, 3-6/hour, 45-minute
trip, also stops at Hakaniemi). Or take the Yellow Line door-to-door shared van service
(€29 for 1-2 people, €45 for 3-4 people, €60 for 5-7 people, tel. 010-00700 or toll tel.
0600-555-555, www.yellowline.fi ) . An ordinary taxi from the airport runs about €35-40.
