Metro stop, or the Okei Express (Окей Экспресс) supermarket in the Galereya (Галерея)

Farmer's Markets: Any Russian farmer's market ( rynok, рынок) is worth a visit even
if you're not shopping. Twenty years ago, these markets were the only way to buy fresh
vegetables on the open market. St. Petersburg's best and most central farmer's market is
at Kuznechy Pereulok 3, next to the Vladimirskaya Metro entrance and right across the
street from the Dostoyevsky Museum (look for the big Рынок sign). In the honey ( my-
od, мёд) section, a chorus line of white-aproned babushki stands ready to let you dip and
test each kind. Fruit sellers shout “Molodoi chelovyek!” (young man) and “Devushka!”
(young lady) as they try to entice you toward their piles of oranges, tomatoes, cucumbers,
and pears. In the herbs section, you can sniff massive bunches of fresh coriander ( kinza,
кинза) and wade through a lifetime supply of horseradish ( khren, хрен). You may see some
lamb. While traditional Russian cuisine doesn't make use of lamb, many of the market
workers are Muslim—”internal immigrants” from Central Asia and the Caucasus (Mon-Sat
8:00-20:00, Sun 8:00-19:00.)
