steep sides and a fl at fl oor. In contrast to the surrounding boreal forest or taiga, an alas
has no trees and usually contains a small thermokarst (thaw) lake. The latter, upon obtain-
ing the minimum depth at which the bottom does not freeze in winter, promotes the
formation of an unfrozen zone or talik. Thus, as thaw-consolidation continues, the lake
progressively deepens and an open talik eventually develops.
