When to visit
Pretty much any time is a good time to visit New York. Winter can be bitingly cold but
the city can be delightful during the run-up to Christmas, when the trees are lit up, the
windows decorated and shops open extra-late. It's coldest in January and February, coin-
ciding with one of the few times to find bargains on flights and hotels, and in any case
New York has some wonderful crisp and clear sunny days even then. Spring, early sum-
mer, and autumn are the most appealing times to visit, when temperatures can be com-
fortably warm. It's wise to avoid visiting between mid-July and August: the temperat-
ures tend be sweltering and the humidity worse. On the other hand, locals tend to leave
town then, so weekends are less crowded.
