Wall Street
was named after the wooden stockade built by the Dutch at the edge of New
Amsterdam in 1653, to protect themselves from the British colonies further north. The street
has been associated with money for hundreds of years, and remains the apex of the global
financial system thanks to the Stock Exchange. Yet Wall Street has gained a new leisurely
air since much of it has been closed to traffic, and fitness studios have opened up in empty
office spaces. The old Bank of Manhattan Trust at no. 40 was briefly the world's tallest
building in 1930 (927ft) - today it's known as the Trump Building after the flamboyant ty-
coon who bought it in 1995.
