New York was born on the southern tip of Manhattan in the 1620s. Today, the heart of
the world's financial markets is also home to some of the city's most historic streets,
sights and Ground Zero, scene of the nation's biggest tragedy and now its most ambi-
tious development. In recent years the neighbourhood has become increasingly residen-
tial, as former bank buildings are converted to luxury condos. To the north, City Hall
Park remains the seat of New York's government, while the Brooklyn Bridge zooms
eastward from here over the river. Take to the water to visit some of the city's offshore
highlights and experience unbeatable views of Manhattan's celebrated skyline; just to
the south of the Financial District, in New York Harbor, lies historic Ellis Island, the
Statue of Liberty and the bucolic charms of Governors Island.
