Rudolph Giuliani is elected mayor - the city's first Republican mayor in 28 years, sig-
nalling a desire for change.
1996
Prosperity returns to New York. Times Square is redeveloped, and the city becomes one of
the safest and statistically most crime-free cities in the country.
2001
World Trade Center's Twin Towers destroyed on September 11 by two planes hijacked by
terrorists; Downtown Manhattan essentially shut down for several weeks. Mayor Rudy Gi-
uliani cuts a highly composed and reassuring figure as New Yorkers struggle to come to
terms with the assault on their city. Michael Bloomberg succeeds Giuliani as mayor a few
months later.
2002
Tribeca Film Festival established with the backing of Robert DeNiro.

Daniel Libeskind is selected to design the new World Trade Center. His initial design goes
through many revisions under pressure from the city and victims' relatives.
