Andrew Carnegie.

The outer boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are formally incor-
porated into New York City. The population swells to three million.
Early 20th century
The first skyscrapers are built, most notably the Flatiron Building (1902) and the Wool-
worth Building (1913).

Macy's opens at Herald Square.
1913
The New York Highlanders baseball team (established here in 1903) becomes known as the
New York Yankees.
1915
The Equitable Building fills every square inch of its site on Broadway, propelling zoning
ordinances in 1916 that demand a degree of setback to allow light to reach the streets.

Prohibition forbids the sale of alcohol. Economic confidence of the 1920s brings the Jazz
Age and Harlem Renaissance.

Jimmy Walker is elected mayor. New York Giants football team established.
