THE SUBWAY
The fastest way to get around is the user-friendly subway , open 24hr. A number or letter
identifies each train and route, and most routes in Manhattan run uptown (north) or down-
town (south), rather than crosstown. Every trip, whether on express or local lines, costs
$2.50 if you pay by MetroCard , available at station booths or debit/credit card-capable
vending machines (you'll pay $2.75 for a single ticket without a MetroCard). MetroCards
can be purchased in any amount from $5 to $80; a $20 purchase gives you $21 on your
card. Unlimited-ride cards - the best deal if you intend to be on the go - allow unlimited
travel for a certain period of time: a 7-day pass costs $30 and a 30-day pass is $112 (there
is no one-day pass).
