It may not be an old brownstone on a leafy street, but this cooperative bed and breakfast
wins plaudits for breaking new ground. Four options (two queen rooms, a two-bed suite
and one dorm-style room with four bunks, which start at $65), with shared bathroom and
high ceilings, in an apartment run by the residents of the other apartments in this building.

You won't mind that this B&B is a little worn around the edges (though it has recently been
updated) - its attractive design and association with Gay Men's Health Crisis make for a
feel-good accommodation experience. Only deluxe rooms include en-suite bathrooms,
while some rooms even have refrigerators and fireplaces, and sleep four. Continental break-
fast included.

Unusual location in the East Village/Alphabet City, in one of the most cutting-edge neigh-
bourhoods in the city, with cheap, cosy rooms (shared bath), friendly owners, kitchens, free
wi-fi and computers, and a tranquil garden. On the downside, it's a long walk to the sub-
way (and there's no breakfast).
