The late nineteenth-century New York Botanical Garden is a brilliant companion piece to
the zoo opposite. Near the main entrance, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a landmark crys-
tal palace, showcases jungle and desert ecosystems, a palm court and a fern forest, among
other seasonal displays. Close by are herb and perennial gardens.

The “flea” epithet is a bit of a misnomer, as this is as much a high-quality arts and crafts
fair as second-hand fair, with two hundred stalls and superb artisan food. The flea also
runs smorgasburg ( www.smorgasburg.com ) , which has locations at East River State
Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
