The largest urban zoo in the United States, which first opened its gates in 1899, houses over
six thousand animals and was one of the first institutions of its kind to realize its inhabitants
both looked and felt better out in the open. The “Wild Asia” exhibit is an almost forty-acre
wilderness through which tigers, elephants and deer roam relatively free, visible from a
monorail (May-Oct; $5). The lemurs of Madagascar and the Congo Gorilla Forest are also
highlights.
