In-Depth Information
With easy access to Manhattan and excellent waterfront views, it's not hard to see why Wil-
liamsburg has become one of the city's most happening spots. The L train to Bedford Aven-
ue will land you on the main stretch; vintage shops, plenty of galleries and artisanal-food
purveyors can be found on surrounding blocks.
After the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903, working-class Jews flooded the
neighborhood from the Lower East Side - many Hasidic Jews live in the area around Lee
Avenue.
McCarren Park separates northern Williamsburg from the fashionable Polish enclave of
Greenpoint, and the park serves as a big hangout, with summer concerts. Its historic pool,
restored in 2012, briefly becomes an ice rink in winter.
