Primarily a research library, the Schomburg Center also holds enlightening temporary ex-
hibitions held in three galleries on site - recent topics have included the struggle to end se-
gregation in US schools. The library itself was created in 1925 by Arthur Schomburg, a
black Puerto Rican obsessed with documenting black culture. Further enriching the site are
the ashes of poet Langston Hughes, perhaps most famous for publishing The Negro Speaks
of Rivers in 1921. The poem inspired the terrazzo and brass “cosmogram” in the atrium bey-
ond the main entrance. Seven lines radiate out from a circle, and the last, “My soul has
grown deep like the rivers”, located in the centre, marks where he is interred.
