This marble assembly of early 1960s buildings, which received a substantial facelift for its
50th birthday, hosts New York's most prestigious performing arts groups.
At the centre of the complex, the world-class Metropolitan Opera House is an impressive
marble and glass building, with murals by Marc Chagall. Flanking the Met are Avery Fish-
er Hall , home to the New York Philharmonic, and Philip Johnson's elegant David H Koch
Theater , home to the New York City Ballet. The fountain in the middle serves as a meeting
place; other spaces include an arts library, multiple theatres, and parks and plazas for sum-
mer events. Informative tours (60-90min, 2-7 tours daily, 10.30am-4.30pm; $18; 212 875
5350) leave from the attractive Atrium, on Broadway between 62nd and 63rd streets.

An early co-op finished in 1884, this grandiose German Renaissance-style mansion, with
turrets, gables and ornate railings, was built to persuade wealthy New Yorkers that life in an
apartment could be just as luxurious as in a private house. Plenty of celebrities have called it
