The Upper West Side has traditionally exuded a more unbuttoned vibe than its counter-
part across Central Park, though there is plenty of money in evidence, especially in the
dazzling late nineteenth-century apartment buildings along the lower stretches of Cent-
ral Park West and Riverside Drive, and at Lincoln Center, New York's palace of cul-
ture. This is generally less true further north, though gorgeous - and occasionally land-
marked - blocks pop up in the 80s, 90s and 100s. Along the way a few museums, most
significantly the Natural History Museum, are worth your time. At its northern edge,
marked by the monolithic Cathedral of St John the Divine, Morningside Heights is a di-
verse area with a youthful buzz from Columbia University; most action revolves around
Broadway.
