Fifth Avenue
lured the Carnegies, Astors, Vanderbilts, Whitneys and others
north to build their fashionable Neoclassical residences. In the late nineteenth century, fanci-
ful mansions were built at vast expense, but lasted only ten or fifteen years before being de-
molished for even wilder extravagances or, more commonly, grand apartment buildings. As
Fifth Avenue progresses north, it turns into the
Museum Mile
