The haughty patrician face of Manhattan since the 1876 opening of Central Park along
which it runs, Fifth Avenue lured the Carnegies, Astors, Vanderbilts, Whitneys and others
north to build their fashionable Neoclassical residences. In the late nineteenth century, fanci-
ful mansions were built at vast expense, but lasted only ten or fifteen years before being de-
molished for even wilder extravagances or, more commonly, grand apartment buildings. As
Fifth Avenue progresses north, it turns into the Museum Mile .
