A must-visit only for those obsessed by global goings-on, the United Nations complex
comprises the glass-curtained Secretariat, the curving sweep of the General Assembly and,
connecting them, the low-rising Conference Wing. Tours - bring ID for security purposes
and arrive early- take in the UN conference chambers and its constituent parts. Even more
revealing than the stately rooms are its thoughtful exhibition spaces and country gifts on
view.

The unsubtle bulk of the Met Life Building , looming over the southern end of Park Avenue
before its interruption by Grand Central, steals the thunder of many of the more delicate
structures around it. Bauhaus guru Walter Gropius had a hand in the design, and the critical
