One of Manhattan's best-loved structures, the Chrysler Building dates from a time
(1928-30) when architects married prestige with grace and style. The car-motif friezes, jut-
ting gargoyles and arched stainless-steel pinnacle give the solemn Midtown skyline a wel-
come whimsical touch. The lobby, once a car showroom, is all you can see of the building's
interior - still worth it to get a look at the walls covered in African marble, murals depicting
airplanes, machines and the brawny builders who worked on the tower, and showy elevator
doors with inlaid wood.
