The largely corporate and commercial area east of Sixth Avenue all the way to the river,
from the 40s through the 50s, is known as Midtown. You'll find the city's sniffiest
boutiques, best Art Deco facades and exemplary Modernist skyscrapers scattered
primarily along E 42nd and E 57th streets and Fifth, Madison and Park avenues. Fifth
is the grand sight- and store-studded spine of Manhattan; the sidewalks nearly reach a
standstill at Christmas, with shoppers stalled at elaborate window displays. Cornelius
Vanderbilt's Beaux-Arts train station, Grand Central Terminal, anchors Park Avenue,
while major museums and city symbols such as the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller
Center and the United Nations dot the rest of the landscape.
