Square. MAP
Founded as a park in 1813, Union Square lies between E 14th and E 17th streets, interrupt-
ing Broadway's diagonal path. The park was the site of many political protests and workers'
rallies between the Civil War and the early twentieth century. Later, the area evolved into an
elegant theatre and shopping district. The leafy and bench-lined square is best known for its
Farmers' Market , held Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 6pm;
there's tons of local produce, cheese, meat, even wine. Craft vendors, none too special, line
the southwest side, though they're taken over by a popular holiday market as Christmas ap-
proaches.
