A grid of tenements, rowhouses and warehouses west of Sixth Avenue between West
14th and 30th streets, Chelsea came to life with the gay community's arrival, beginning
in the late Seventies. New York's art scene further transformed the neighbourhood in
the Nineties with an explosion of galleries between Tenth and Twelfth avenues. Super-
store retail sticks to Sixth Avenue, while Eighth is lined with cafés and bars. The trian-
gular wedge of land created by Fourteenth, Gansevoort and West streets, aka the Meat-
packing District, is a trendy place for shopping and clubbing.
