BLEECKER STREET
SHERIDAN SQUARE AND CHRISTOPHER PARK
Subway #1 to Christopher St-Sheridan Sq. MAP
Confusingly, Christopher Park holds a pompous-looking statue of Civil War cavalry com-
mander General Sheridan, though Sheridan Square is actually the next space down, where
West 4th Street meets Washington Place. Historically, the area is better known, however, as
the scene of one of the worst and bloodiest of New York's Draft Riots, when a marauding
mob assembled here in 1863 and attacked members of the black community. Violence also
erupted here in 1969 during the Stonewall Riots. The event is commemorated by George
Segal's Gay Liberation Monument , unveiled in 1992. Further north, 66 Perry St, between
Bleecker and West 4th Street, was used as the exterior of Carrie's apartment in Sex and the
City , while there's almost always a line of people waiting outside lauded Magnolia Bakery
at Bleecker and West 11th St. The historic White Horse Tavern , over at West 11th Street and
Hudson, is where legend claims Dylan Thomas had his last drink.
CHRISTOPHER STREET
Subway #1 to Christopher St-Sheridan Sq. MAP
The Village's main gay artery runs from Sixth Avenue to West Street passing by many a gay
bar, sex toy shop and café. The lively street's weekend cruise scene is still strong, although
the domain is by no means as exclusively gay as it once was.
