For many visitors, the West Village, Greenwich Village - or simply “the Village” - is the
most-loved neighbourhood in New York. It sports refined Federal and Greek Revival
townhouses and a busy late-night streetlife, while cosy restaurants, bars and cafés clut-
ter every corner - many of the attractions that first brought bohemians here around the
start of World War I. The area proved fertile ground for struggling artists and intellec-
tuals, and the neighbourhood's clubs and off-Broadway theatres came to define Village
life, laying the path for rebellious, countercultural groups and musicians in the 1960s;
John Coltrane, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Hendrix all built their early careers here. Today,
the central part of the Village is dominated by the sprawling New York University cam-
pus, adding a youthful edge to this fashionable, historic and increasingly expensive
corner of Manhattan.
