This serene, Japanese-style haven is a great date spot
and the cocktails are some of the best in the city. It can
be hard to find, though: walk through the Yokocho res-
taurant, up the stairs.

The decadent Versailles theme at this funky wine bar, replete with wall-size mirrors and
crimson satin couches, is backed by an extensive cocktail menu (from $13).
BURP CASTLE

Though bartenders no longer wear monks' habits and choral music is rarely piped in,
you are encouraged to speak in tones below a whisper. Oh, and there are still over 550
different types of beer.
KGB BAR

A dark bar on the second floor, which was the Ukrainian Labor Home social club in the
1950s, but is better known now for its marquee literary readings.
MANITOBA'S
99 Ave B between E 6th and 7th sts. Subway L to First Ave; #6 to Astor Place. Daily 2pm-4am. MAP
Run by Dick Manitoba, lead singer of the punk group The Dictators, the kickin' jukebox
and rough-and-tumble vibe at this spot make it a drinkers' favourite.
