Powerful symbol of the Bowery's rebirth, this avant-garde art gallery is housed in a stack of
seven shimmering aluminium boxes. The warehouse-like galleries are spacious, but still
small enough to digest without overdosing on the diverse range of temporary exhibits in-
side. The Bowery itself was until relatively recently a byword for poverty and destitution,
America's original skid row. At its peak, in 1949, around 14,000 homeless people could be
found here, most dossing down in hostels known as flophouses. Today only eight flophouses
remain, and the street is increasingly lined with smart, contemporary buildings, stores and
bars.
