In-Depth Information
Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC) flights fly into Yonaguni Airport on the north central coast, near Sonai.
Gunkan-iwa (“Battleship Rock”) is one of several spectacular rock formations south of Cape Agari.
Nearby, only three-quarters of a mile (1 kilometer) away from the port, is a fairly large
conservation zone around Kubura Peak ( 久部良岳 ; Kubura-daké), which has an elevation of
617 feet (188 meters). It's a popular hiking area. The island's highest point is Mt Urabe ( 宇良
部岳 ; Urabé-daké) at 758 feet (231 meters). It's located in the central eastern section of Yona-
guni.
Although Yonaguni is not usually known as a prime beach destination, nevertheless,
it has several good white sand beaches. The two best, at least for families with children,
are in Higawa. Right in town is the largest and most popular, the long, crescent-shaped
Higawa-hama ( 比川浜 ). A few hundred meters to the west is another, also crescent-shaped
beach, Kataburu-hama ( カタブル浜 ). Both of these beaches have long, gentle slopes with easy
grades. Higawa-hama may be preferred because its long tsunami seawall and reef protect the
beach from breaking waves. Neither is good for snorkeling.
