In-Depth Information
The Mariyudo Falls cascade in two sections over rocks before emptying into a deep pond.
The short hiking trail to Mariyudo Falls traverses lush tropical jungle.
It's a pretty cascade broken into two halves, tumbling over rock, then emptying into a
jungle pond. Mariyudo means “round pool” in local dialect. The falls take their name from
the pond. It's quite idyllic and naturally the subject of countless tourists' photos. Although on
a hot and steamy summer day you may relish a cool dip, be warned that the fresh waters all
over Iriomote are full of leeches. Some people don't care. If you're one of them, bring some
salt or matches to remove them afterwards. They're not poisonous and they really don't do
any harm, they're just sort of a disgusting.
The Kanpire Falls, a 5-10 minute walk from the Mariyudo Falls, is a popular swimming spot.
