and Miyako's most famous international attraction, the Ueno German Culture Village (
うえ
のドイツ文化 村
; Ueno doitsu bunka-mura).
It is part resort, hotel complex, conference center, amusement park, museum, shipwreck
memorial, Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Haus” for children, and part kitsch. There's even a full-
scale reproduction of the Marksburg Castle of the Rhine River. And if that's not enough, there
are a couple of sections of the Berlin Wall. The whole place is a bit over the top, but its in-
spiration and the operative word for both the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Stone in town and
the German Culture Village is
hakuai
(
博愛
), which means philanthropy, for it was on a coral
reef just offshore from Ueno where in 1873 the German ship the
Robertson
foundered and
sank. The villagers rescued the crew, cared for them and after a month sent them home to
Germany. Ever since that time, this village and Miyakojima have enjoyed a special friendship
with Germany.
