“Ghosts from the Crushing Defeat”
Created in 1904 or 1905, this colored woodcut print by Japanese arist Kobayashi Kiyochika ( 小林清
1847-1915) shows Tsar Nicholas II waking from a nightmare of his destroyed military equipment
from their defeat in the Russo-Japanese War. The wriing in the upper let purports to tell the stor-
ies of the batered cannons, telegraph, locomoive and batleships. Under the itle “The Tsar Sees His
Forces Returning,” the original of this work is held by the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
